Water Street and Wall Street
“The night sound of a distant fire engine that comes closer and closer, and then passes your street.”—item 21 (and still a good one) on a list of “101 Things to Love about New York City” from 1976(!), discovered via this WYNC story. Something from my personal list: the smell of Chinese food when the weather starts to warm up, when you turn a corner and least expect it, that rush of garlic that reminds you to be hungry for anything, for an evening.
